Infused Spirits are the Perfect DIY Gift

Homemade infused spirits are the ideal gift to give during the holidays. Seriously! Because:

∙ You create them yourself, which makes them super thoughtful and personal, but…

∙ They’re shockingly easy to make, so you’ll still have time for the million other things you have to do during the holidays.

∙ The bottles you put them in are the gift wrap. Sure, you can pretty them up with a tag and a ribbon, but no cumbersome wrapping paper!

∙ If you make enough, you can bottle a bunch and have them on hand for when you need a last minute gift.

∙ In the highly unlikely scenario that you do have extras, they’ll last a while.

The process for making infusions is pretty simple. The basic method is as follows:

1) Put your alcohol and your flavoring ingredients in a sealed glass jar.

2) Let it sit in a cool, dark place for a few days, shaking occasionally, until the alcohol is infused with flavor (the time needed for this can vary depending on what you’re using—fresh fruits need only a few days while spices can take a week or two; you’ll know when it’s ready by tasting).

3) Once it’s done, strain your infused alcohol through a cheesecloth, fine mesh strainer, or coffee filter, then bottle it, and voila! Your gift is ready.

Before you start, you do want to give some thought to what your ingredient + alcohol pairings will be. Lighter spirits like vodka and silver tequila won’t overwhelm delicate ingredients and can be a blank template for stronger ones, too. Whiskey and dark rum, on the other hand, already have a lot of oomph, so they’re best for spices and bolder flavors. If you have the time, do a test infusion with a smaller amount before committing to a whole batch.

And while the possibilities for spirit + flavor combinations is just about endless, there are a few seasonal flavors that demand to be boozified. For example, gingerbread spices would be incredible with rum or peppermint candy canes with vodka.
