Giving of Thanks – Counting Blessings at Fairway

It is normal to take pause and consider one’s blessings at this time of year. This Thanksgiving deserves a bit more reflection upon our bounty, and an even deeper consideration of the good will and giving spirit of those who have joined together to look after each other at this tremendous time of need.

Fairway Market and Yorkville Common Pantry (YCP) formed a bond earlier this year in an effort to fill some of the immediate needs of some of our struggling neighbors. We have joined forces to raise funds and awareness, as well as to provide good, nutritious food to those in need of assistance.

It has been a grassroots effort, neighbor helping neighbor. Neither Fairway nor YCP could ever have envisioned the tremendous impact this partnership has had.

Together, we have worked to rescue and re-distribute food within the regular channels, and in the aftermath of Sandy we have expanded our reach by joining forces with other groups of volunteers and civic leaders to make sure that needed food and supplies are reaching the right places. (Please see the updated list of needed supplies here if you are still looking for a way to contribute.)

It was heartwarming to learn that one of our first Sandy relief efforts, preparing 200+ bagged sandwich meals with the TINYC Youth Group, was the first set of meals delivered to ravaged Coney Island, Brooklyn. With these connections in place, we were able to assemble rapidly to provide assistance, and have continued the effort to do so.

At the end of September, Fairway Market, with the support of the community, raised $5,000 for YCP at the 92nd Street Y Street Fair. We gathered this past Saturday to mark the donation and to help pack up over 2,000 Thanksgiving meals. Many businesses, donors and volunteers worked together to make sure that so many families will have the essentials for a Thanksgiving celebration. In addition to the packed parcels which will be distributed, YCP will also will be serving more than 500 hot Thanksgiving meals on Wednesday and Thursday at its facility.

YCP had a surprise for us this Saturday, when it announced that Fairway Market has been chosen to receive a Community Partner Award for bringing awareness and support to Yorkville Common Pantry’s work to fight hunger in NYC. This is truly meaningful work that we do together.

In the spirit of giving thanks, we stop and reflect.

Thank you for giving of yourselves, whether you give your time, your money or your resources to help others. We have seen such an unbelievable outpouring of love and compassion over the past few weeks. It has been wonderful to work directly with so many of you. Collectively, we are counting our blessings and giving thanks for all of the support shown to our friends and neighbors.
